Baby Pigs 2011
| March 12, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Animals |
Baby pigs once again live at The Wallow! This year’s pigs are Duroc/Poland China crosses, which is different from last year’s Yorkshire/Hampshire crosses. It’s exciting to work with a different breed, and their red coats mean sunburn will be less of a concern this year. I also think they’re cuter this year, but that could just because I’m so unbelievably happy to have pigs around again! We’ve got four pigs this year – one for… Keep Reading
Yes, I Have Considered Goats
| March 10, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Animals |
(Photo credit publicenergy) Joshua and I are planning to get sheep this spring. Every time one of us mentions this, someone says, “Have you considered goats?” Every. Single. Time. We’ve been planning for sheep since last fall, and we talk to people about our homesteading adventures a lot, which means I have heard, “Have you considered goats?” over and over and over and over again. The problem with this is not just the repetition. The… Keep Reading
Almost Spring 2011
| March 9, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Nature |
It’s almost spring at The Wallow! Here’s the last of this year’s wood stash: If we were to use that up, it would be right around three cords that we used this winter. Here’s the view out to the west of the house: When it’s really spring, that will all be covered in lush greenness. Here are the raspberry canes we transplanted last fall: I’m watching with anticipation to see if they made it and… Keep Reading
Gender and My Baby
| March 7, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting, Think About It |
The first family I nannied for had a 3 year old son and an 8 month old daughter when I started. The mom and I had a long conversation one day where she explained that there were innate differences between boys and girls. She said she treated both kids the same, yet there were key differences between them based on gender. I was just getting started learning about childhood development at the time, and I’m… Keep Reading

Here are some interesting items that have recently run across my screen. (Photo by sharpneil) I’m Just Concerned For Your Health from Dances with Fat provides a concise rundown with what’s wrong with telling people to lose weight for their health. This line is a truly stand-out quote: “Suggesting that people lose weight to be more healthy is telling them to do something nobody can prove is possible, for a reason nobody can prove is… Keep Reading
Preparing a Polyamory Series
| March 4, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Relationships |
I realized recently that sometime this year marks 20 years of being polyamorous for me. Seems like a good time to take a look back at the experience, so I’m planning to do a series of posts about my polyamory. Here’s your opportunity to shape the direction of the series. What do you want to know about polyamory? If you’re not polyamorous yourself or are new to the idea, what questions do you have? If… Keep Reading
Baby Bellyaching – February 2011
| March 2, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Pregnancy and Birth |
February actually just ended, but I know no one wants to miss out on my bitching about mainstream parenting magazines! For February, I got BabyTalk (Feb 2011) and American Baby (Feb 2011). Let’s see what I can find to complain about! Special Note: Other than this note, Baby Bellyaching is exempt from any sort of disclaimers, examination of privilege, or acknowledging people’s different reasons and situations. This is just a space for me to bitch. First… Keep Reading
