Amish

This post originally appeared on March 20th, 2009 on my now-defunct blog Right to Bleed and appears here in a slightly modified form. Reading about different cultures is often interesting to me, and while the Amish are right here in the United States they definitely qualify as a different culture. When I have escapist fantasies (tropical-island, alone-in-the-mountains) sometimes I imagine myself running away to be an Amish person (assuming that would even be possible). The… Keep Reading

Parent Replacement Items

I have used the phrase Parent Replacement Items to describe a set of items for baby that are used in place of something traditionally provided by the parent. The big obvious one is the pacifier, of course, since the pacifier is explicitly designed to mimic the human body. Nearly everything you’re encouraged to buy for baby is a parent replacement item, though. A baby monitor replaces parents’ own eyes and ears on the baby. A… Keep Reading

Summer Pigs 2011

The happiest pig on the block is one covered in mud during the heat of the day, of course: Sausage and Fatback peek out from the shade: Nomming on some corn tossed on the ground: Peeking out from a mud hole: Punkin, with my hammock in the background: Keep Reading

Follow Me on Google+

If you pay any attention to social media at all, you’ve noticed the arrival of Google+ on the social media scene. I’ve dabbled a bit with Twitter and grudgingly used Facebook, but I adore Google+. My bottom line is that I love everything Google does. My Android phone has been a true blessing while I’m breastfeeding. I’ve got everything at my fingertips, and a lot of that is my Google products – email, Reader, docs,… Keep Reading

Using Me As A Pacifier

“He’s just using you as a pacifier.” What a stupid sentence. I actually heard this from the first pediatrician we went to. He said I only had to let Dylan feed 15-20 minutes on a side, because after that he was only using me as a pacifier. I know what he means. When Dylan is sleepy, he’ll suck for about 10 minutes in a deep “I’m getting food from this” way. Then he’ll mostly fall asleep… Keep Reading

I Feed My Baby

I have heard the phrase “breastfeeding on demand” used to describe how often a mother might breastfeed her child. I sometimes hear “on request” and “on cue”, too, but these are much less frequent. A Google search for “breastfeeding on request” only turns up 89 results (which is darn near zero in Google-land), and some those are a different context, like, “Room available for breastfeeding on request.” I think about word usage a lot. And… Keep Reading

Baby’s First Camping Trips

Only 10 days after Dylan was born we went camping at a burn event called Euphoria. It was great to introduce everyone to Dylan. It was a short trip, just two nights. In October we’ll be doing Alchemy, which will be a bit more involved: 5 nights long, plus we’ll be taking our theme camp, Fucking Awesome, so I’ll have a lot more to do at the burn. There will also be lots of people… Keep Reading
