Surprise Mice in the Compost
| December 20, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Animals, Nature |
I was outside with Joshua the other day as he turned the compost from one bin to another. Part way into the pile, he exclaimed at what he had found: Baby mice. Or some other kind of rodent. I rescued them from the compost as he kept turning and kept finding more babies. Then, he uncovered a stash of pristine corn: Mama mouse had been swiping corn from the barn and socking it away in… Keep Reading
Smile It Out
| December 19, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting |
Dylan doesn’t have a rigid bedtime routine. Sometimes he falls asleep breastfeeding while Joshua and I are watching a movie. Sometimes he falls asleep on my shoulder as I rock him and listen to a CD of lullabies. But sometimes I’m really tired, and I can tell he’s really tired, and I take the two of us up to bed while Dylan is still awake, and we’ll lay on our bed in the dim light… Keep Reading

Here’s Dylan and his friend Fin in their flat caps. I think this needs a caption. What can you come up with? Keep Reading
Baby K’tan Review
| December 15, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting |
After I reviewed my Moby Wrap, someone from Baby K’tan contacted me to say that they were interested in a review of Baby K’tan from me as an experienced Moby user. I jumped at the chance to try it out, because I’m really enjoying learning lots of different carriers. I was provided a Baby K’tan to try out so I could review it, and this review is entirely my own opinion. The big selling point… Keep Reading
How Not To Cosleep
| December 12, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting |
In light of my post on cosleeping yesterday, it seems that some people don’t know how to cosleep safely, so we thought we’d make you this helpful illustration of what not to do. Don’t let Dylan’s and Joshua’s smiles fool you! This is a harrowing situation where everyone involved is teetering precariously near death. Lots of soft pillows around baby’s face? Check. Baby laying on tummy? Check. Adult laying on top of baby? Check. Don’t… Keep Reading
Cosleeping Safety and the Milwaukee Billboards
| December 11, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting |
I’ve started looking into cosleeping in the wake of the Milwaukee anti-cosleeping billboards. I said to a friend recently that there’s something fucked up in Milwaukee to have caused all of their recent deaths, so that’s where I started in my research: what the fuck is happening in Milwaukee? I started with the 2010 City of Milawukee Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Report. It’s immediately apparent that Milwaukee has an abysmal infant death rate, which is… Keep Reading
Dylan: 6 Months Old
| December 9, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Parenting |
Dear Dylan, The name Dylan has other people it’s attached to, like Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan. But in my mind it has so quickly just become YOUR name, even as I struggle to think of you as a person, distinct from “baby” and distinct from me. When you were inside me you were just an extension of me. Now, at 6 months old, I’m just an extension of you. Joshua gets these deep body… Keep Reading
