One New Chicken

We’ve had a mama chicken sitting on a clutch of eggs. At first I counted 18 eggs underneath her. A few days later I counted 16 eggs and figured I must have miscounted. Right before leaving for Alchemy, I counted only single digits of eggs. Uh-oh. I’m guessing that something has been stealing eggs when mama goes off to eat.
Tuesday was 21 days from when she started laying, and right on schedule out popped… one chick. There were only 4 more eggs in the nest and they were busted up. I don’t know what happened.
I want to be happy about the one chick. It’s a pretty disappointing result after imagining as many as 18. Last time this mama sat there was only one chick, too. Maybe she’s like me and just isn’t so good at the making babies part. Like me, though, she’s doing a fine job of taking care of her one little baby.
Edit: I spoke too soon about her mothering qualities. It appears this morning that the chick is no more. Total fail. I guess now is the time to start thinking about buying an incubator if we want to have baby birds around here.
